Wildfire Kits Needed for ‘Camp Fire’ Survivors

December 06, 2018

Butte County announced last week that beginning December 10, they expect to reopen parts of Paradise to allow survivors of the Camp Fire to visit their properties. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Depot West in Salt Lake City shipped 1,656 cleaning buckets immediately after the fire, to assist people whose homes are intact but that will need cleaning. Now the California-Nevada Conference is asking congregations to make “Wildfire Kits” to assist survivors as they search through ashes for any valuables that may have survived.

The kits consist of a rake and shovel, plus a variety of small items such as Tyvek coveralls, gloves, masks, goggles, spray bottle, cleaning towels, and a tarp, placed inside a 5-gallon bucket with a lid.

See the list of bucket contents, suggested sources for those supplies, and instructions.

The Wildfire Kits will be collected at three locations:

  • Conference Office, 1350 Halyard Drive, West Sacramento, CA 95691; M-F, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • San Ramon Valley UMC, 902 Danville Blvd, Alamo, CA 94507; M-F, 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Los Altos UMC, 655 Magdalena, Los Altos, CA 94024; M-F, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sun. 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Time is of the essence! We are planning to gather up the kits to transport them to Butte County on two dates – December 10 and 17 – so please drop them off at one of the locations by December 9 for the first delivery and December 16 for the second delivery.
