The Rev. David Samelson, Great Northern District Superintendent, has been in contact with pastors from the two circuits affected by the Oroville Dam evacuation.
Eight churches in the Great Northern District have been affected by the evacuation order. In the Butte Circuit: Biggs UMC, Gridley UMC, and First UMC Oroville, and five churches in the Yuba City/Marysville Circuit: First UMC Marysville and Marysville Hmong, First UMC Yuba City, Grace UMC Yuba City, and Love Korean UMC Yuba City.
All of the pastors in these churches are doing a systematic wellness check for all of their congregants.
Last night, shelters were set up in three United Methodist congregations First UMC Roseville, Sutter UMC, and Trinity UMC Chico.
Sunday night, Sutter UMC hosted about 65 people (plus nine dog/ and cats), and Trinity UMC Chico hosted about 20 people.
Rev. David Samelson reports that 75 to 80 percent of United Methodists evacuated to family members outside of the evacuation area.
Conference officials have been in conversation with the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) and the American Red Cross to assess the current, and changing situation, and explore the best ways to respond and be helpful to the churches and affected communities
As a reminder, during this immediate time, items such as clothing, furniture, toys, etc. are not needed. Do not ship any items to the Conference Center, or to the affected churches in those areas.
The Conference Center is in the process of collecting names of persons who wish to volunteer with shelter efforts. Depending upon needs in various areas, and the state of the evacuation, this may be short term, or long term. To sign up to volunteer, click here
