Hurricane Maria, one of the most powerful hurricanes in history, devastated the Island of Puerto Rico in 2017. Aware that recovery would be long and challenging, members of the California-Nevada Annual Conference contributed an astonishing $80,000-plus to aid that recovery, by giving to The Methodist Church of Puerto Rico (MCPR) through this year’s Annual Conference Offering.
We would like to continue to help. One way is by joining our next United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) team trip to Puerto Rico, scheduled for Feb. 15-23, 2019. It will be the first such trip since the Annual Conference Offering was taken, and will be led by Steve Elliott, from San Ramon Valley UMC, and me. Both of us are very experienced team leaders and co-led the March 2018 Cal-Nev trip to Puerto Rico, as well.
In February we will be returning to assist with rebuilding damaged homes. Our specific assignment will be made closer to the time of the trip, but it is safe to assume that it will include a variety of construction tasks.
The MCPR has arranged for teams to stay at a retreat camp or a local church. While conditions are improving, for now you should assume little or no electricity, air conditioning, or hot water. Drinking water and meals will be provided. We will receive our assigned location closer to the time of our trip.
The MCPR requires that participants be 18 years and older. The cost will be $500 for participant expenses such as meals, insurance, ground transportation, and housing – in addition to $425 to $800 for air travel.
For more information, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or 650-468-7890, or Steve at email@example.com or 925-640-9797. Registration closes on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018.
