Disaster Response Ministry establishes new relationship with Pinole UMC

December 17, 2020

A perennial problem for the Conference Disaster Response Ministry has been a shortage of storage space.

We have historically not had a dedicated space to store the supplies we use in fire response like Fire Buckets, Cleaning Kits, and sifting tools. As such, we have always been limited in how many people we can serve. This year, we met over 1000 people across two fires, and by the end of our rapid response work, we had started to run short on supplies. In the North Complex Fire in Oroville CA, we quickly ran out of complete Fire Buckets and were giving out whatever loose tools and equipment we had left.

That is why we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Pinole UMC.

Pinole UMC has been generous enough to offer us the use of one of their storage sheds, which will let us store hundreds more Fire Buckets, Cleaning Kits, and other disaster response supplies. With our newly expanded space, we have already started rebuilding our supply. Willow Glen UMC, Asbury UMC, and Lynnewood UMC had Wildfire Buckets ready to donate and we have safely stored those in Pinole.

Our deepest thanks to Pastor Elmar De Ocera, Lay Leader Abner Lumabas, and Trustees Chair Richard Lindsay, as well as all the Trustees and congregation members at Pinole UMC, for working with us to set up this partnership. We are blessed to have them as partners and grateful for their support of this crucial work.Special thanks to Leslie Carmichael, Steve Elliot, Mary Ellen Huey, Doug Huey, and Stanley Maleski for their work transporting and storing these supplies for the Conference while we finalized this partnership.

We hope to partner with other churches throughout the Conference to expand both our capacity and our reach even further.
