Clergy in the California-Nevada Annual Conference will begin 2019 by being Called to Wholeness.
This new experience, developed by a task force from the Board of Ordained Ministry and Cabinet, including Bishop Minerva Carcaño, is to be an eight-month process of personal and professional assessment and renewal. For deacons and elders, it will commence on the five-year anniversary of their full connection and ordination; and for licensed local pastors, on the fifth anniversary of receiving their license for pastoral ministry.
The 2016 Book of Discipline Par. 349.3 requires a periodic assessment of each clergy person under appointment. This process includes setting aside time for renewal, reflection, and evaluation so that clergy might assess their effectiveness in ministry and discern God’s call to continue in ordained ministry. While participation is mandatory, the prayer and hope of the Called to Wholeness planning team is that clergy will receive this time as a gift that enables them to live fully into God’s claim and call on their lives.
The process will include four integrated phases:
Recognition (by the bishop, BOOM, SPRCs, and at ACS);
Renewal & Reflection a two-day retreat at the beginning of the eight-month period, and another at the end);
Resourcing & Alignment (a commitment to review personality traits, performance reviews, and create new goals to be lived out over the next five years; involves a one-day retreat); and
Rejoicing (a worship celebration at Gathering of the Orders affirming those who have completed Called to Wholeness).
A number of clergy from the class that will be celebrating five-year anniversaries of ordination or licensing in 2019 will receive letters of invitation from the bishop and BOOM Chairperson Jeffrey Hall early in the year (tentatively planned for Feb. 1st), as will their SPRCs. The first retreat will be in late April or early May. This pilot phase of Called to Wholeness will conclude with a celebration at the 2020 Gathering of the Orders.
Called to Wholeness intends to honor clergypersons every fifth year of their ministry. It is to be an exceptional time of fellowship, prayer, dialogue, and worship, as well as of reflection and evaluation.
The cost is being underwritten by the California-Nevada Annual Conference.
