Rev. Matthew Pearson, pastor of Elk Grove United Methodist Church in the California-Nevada Annual Conference, was interviewed this week for an ABC Channel 10 report on a controversy over inclusive textbooks. The Elk Grove Board of Education Tuesday night (Feb. 5, 2019) heard numerous arguments both in support of and in opposition to new K-8 textbooks that comply with the 2012 Fair ACT, before unanimously approving the curriculum.
That state law requires schools to make reference to contributions by members of the LGBTQ community and by persons with disabilities, in their teaching of history.
Pearson said, “I think the more diverse education we can offer, the more chance we have to inspire a diversity of students in future leaders.”
