Director and Campus Minister, CA House
The new academic year is in full swing at CA House (Cal Aggie Christian Association), United Methodist-affiliated campus ministry at UC Davis. Welcome Week has brought a flurry of retreats, dinners, and mixers, and along with it an influx of university students ready to dive into the 2019-2020 program year.
On the first day of school, September 25th, students gathered in the Great Hall at CA House for our first Open Table Multifaith Program of the year. With more than 40 students and five CA House Board members in attendance, the gathering began with blessing our time together by sharing moments of gratitude, ranging from gratitude for the Woodstock’s Pizza we were about to enjoy, to warm and sunny days, to one student who shared gratefulness for a stranger who helped her navigate the infamous “Death Star” building on campus so that she didn’t miss her first lecture of the year! After sharing a meal together, returning CA House students reflected on the important role CA House has played during their UC Davis journey, while new students offered what they were excited for as they started a new year.
On Sunday, Sept. 29, CA House highlighted its Multifaith Living Community with the 2nd Annual House Hop. This open house-style event is an opportunity for students to show off their homes to other students and Davis community members and engage in a little friendly competition. This year’s theme was “Animation Station,” where each of the seven townhouses selected an animated movie on which to decorate their front door. Students were judged based on several categories, including “Best in Show,” “Most Creative Door,” “Most Hospitable House,” “Best Snacks,” and “Most Thrifty Door.”
Monday, Sept. 30 was our first Christian Student Fellowship of the year. Students gathered for a shared meal and a moment of intention-setting centered around a community art project, preparing themselves for a year full of spiritual growth, and centeredness amid the chaos that is university life. CA House Monday Christian Fellowship meets every Monday at 6 p.m. when school is in session.
Throughout the year, CA House hosts a number of programs that are open to the public, whether you are a current student, recent graduate, or have not been a student for many decades! Please join them at their Davis location for one of their upcoming events:
Every Wednesday, 6 p.m.: Open Table Multifaith Program – Join us for dinner and conversation centered around one of our four basic values: faith, community, social justice, and sustainability. All are welcome!
Sunday, Oct. 6, 11 a.m. service: Student Welcome Sunday at Davis UMC – CA House will be highlighting its partnership with Davis United Methodist Church by joining in the celebration of World Communion Sunday with students serving as Scripture readers and communion servers.
Thursday, Nov. 14, 6 p.m.: CA House Lecture Series – Join us for our first lecture of the year, focused on Multifaith Dialogue. Topic: “The Importance of Interfaith Work for Non-Religious Folks.” After one of our students secured a grant from the Interfaith Youth Core for a panel discussion, CA House looks forward to highlighting the voices of our atheist, agnostic, and humanist friends on the centrality of interfaith engagement. Location TBD. (Winter Quarter Lecture Theme: Social Justice; Spring Quarter Lecture Theme: Sustainability)
