Bishops Urge UMs to Join in Observing Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Cal-Nev’s Rev. Hubert Ivery to Lead Workshop

The United Methodist Council of Bishops is urging United Methodists to join in observing the global Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, organized by the World Council of Churches, Jan. 18-25.

This year’s theme is “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue ...” It is inspired by Deuteronomy 16:18-20.

Here in California-Nevada, observances have been planned by the North State Ecumenical Conference, to include a workshop on racism led by the Rev. Hubert Ivery of the California-Nevada Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church (at right, with a young member of his congregation). It will take place 2-4 pm. on Thursday Jan. 24, 2019 at Capital Christian Center, 9470 Micron Avenue, Sacramento, and will be followed by the annual Prayer for Christian Unity banquet at 5 p.m. and worship at 7 p.m.

The workshop description reads:

Racial division seems to be increasing in our nation. What is our responsibility as individuals? What can we do? What can churches do? How are such responses connected to our faith, our spirituality? In response to these and other questions, you are invited to attend the Intentional Inclusive Community Workshop as a part of The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity …

Dr. Ivery is the current Chair of the Bay Area Ecumenical Officers Committee and a past chairperson of the Committee on Christian Unity and Interreligious Relationships for the California-Nevada Conference. He has been involved extensively in the areas of intercultural communication, spirituality and psychology, ecumenical and interfaith relations, and community organizing over the last 20 years. He also is co-founder and co-director of a new non-profit organization, The Center for Intentional Inclusive Community.
