If you spend time in the pulpit, you’re invited to spend a day with members of the Sermon Brainwave podcast team, Matthew Skinner and Karoline Lewis, thinking about how and why you preach.
Two weeks from today, at The Table at Central United Methodist Church in Sacramento, you and your colleagues in ministry will have a chance to consider how sermons that are attentive to biblical passages and their nuances can lead people of faith into rich reflections on God, the gospel, and the contexts in which we live.
Through a combination of plenary sessions, workshops, and discussion Skinner and Lewis will provide opportunities to ponder your approach to preaching in general, along with some of the specific biblical texts coming up during the season after Pentecost. You’ll be sure to conclude the day refreshed and equipped with new insights to fuel your preaching.
Besides their co-host duties, Skinner is Professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary and Lewis is Associate Professor of Biblical Preaching and The Marbury E. Anderson Chair of Biblical Preaching there.
The event will take place Thursday, May 2, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and is open to all preachers, whether lay or ordained. Cost: $65 (includes lunch plus light snacks and coffee). Register here.
Plan to arrive early! If you get to the church between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. you’ll be able to enjoy gathering music from the jazz musicians – under the direction of Brenden Lowe – who make up the worship team at The Table. Listen to a sample here.
The Table at Central UMC is located at 5265 H Street, Sacramento, CA 95819.
