September 2022 Mission Connection Newsletter and Mission Program

Dear Friends in Faith,

Greetings on behalf of your Conference Committee on Mission Service!

Here is the latest news on mission service opportunities.

We are now well into wildfire season and are participating in several relief and recovery efforts.  This is a good time to get familiar our Conference Disaster Response Ministry and to consider what your church might want to do.  We are happy to explore options with you.

Here is the link to an overview of our Ministry: California-Nevada Conference of The UMC | About Disaster Response (cnumc.org) and a link to the self-study Introduction to Volunteering in a Disaster: Introduction to Volunteering (cnumc.org).  Our Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, Steve Elliott, at UMVIMCoordinator@calnevumc.org can provide more details.

Second, free mobile phones and internet are available to anyone in need through the California Lifeline Program.  This includes people affected by disasters, that are unhoused, or simply cannot afford basic mobile phone service or access to the internet.  Qualified individuals and families can receive a free phone, free mobile broadband service, discounted broadband at home and discounted tablet computers.

Churches or community groups can participate in this program through Lynn Hermoso’s ChangeMakers Connectivity and Community outreach.  Contact Lynn at 619-855-0217 or lynnhermoso@yahoo.com.  She can explain more and help access this program. Here is a link to more information (add link to article here)

And lastly, attached is the September issue of The Mission Connection, the newsletter of our Conference United Methodist Volunteers in Mission Program. This issue includes an overview of Rise Against Hunger, an invitation to participate in wildfire rebuilding and the basics about mission trip registration and reporting.  This month's newsletter can be found HERE

We share Conference mission and outreach opportunities each month.  If you have a story you want to highlight, just send an article and photos to me, Justin at justincryu@gmail.com or to Shari Sandoval at sharis@calnevumc.org.
