Rev. Robert Schwartz

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our brother, Rev. Robert (Bob) Schwartz, died on March 3, 2022.
Bob transferred to the California-Nevada Conference in 1961 from the New York Conference and was ordained an Elder in Full Connection in 1962. He served Alameda, First UMC; Alameda, Court Street UMC; Porterville, First UMC; Los Gatos UMC; Wasco UMC; Saratoga, Grace UMC; Carson City, First UMC; Bakersfield, First UMC; and Carmel, Church of the Wayfarer. Bob retired in 2001.
Bob was born on May 22, 1937 in the Bronx, New York. Bob had an abiding commitment to youth ministry and sought to be actively engaged with the young people of the local churches he served throughout his career. Bob also had a deep commitment to social causes and actively supported organizations like Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. In more recent years he focused on advocacy for our unhoused brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Schwartz, of Bakersfield CA and by his son Paul Schwartz of Oakland CA, and by one grandchild. He was pre-deceased by his son David Schwartz.
A celebration of Bob’s life is planned for Sunday May 22, 2022 (time pending) at Bakersfield, First United Methodist Church. Rev. Richard Thompson, Rev. Harry Wood and Rev. Doug Norris will preside.
Gifts in memory of Bob may be sent to the Robert and David Schwartz Scholarship Fund of Bakersfield, First United Methodist Church.
Let us continue to give God thanks for Bob’s life and witness and hold his family close in prayer.
