Rev. John V. Moore
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our brother, Rev. John V. Moore, died on Saturday, July 27, 2019.
John served the Orange Avenue Sacramento, Asbury Sacramento, First UMC Hayward, Trinity Chico, and Glide Memorial San Francisco churches; Davis campus ministry; as Bay View District Superintendent; and the First UMC, Reno and First UMC Sacramento churches. He retired on Dec. 1, 1986.
John was especially appreciated for his quick wit and wisdom. After losing two daughters and a grandchild in Jonestown, Guyana, he and his wife counseled other parents whose relatives were involved in cult-like groups. John was a founding member of the Council on Religion and the Homosexual, a group that advocated for gay rights, and in his retirement directed an AIDS hospice in Sacramento. He passed just six weeks shy of his 100th birthday.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Moore, and by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Barbara, his daughters Carolyn and Annie, and by his grandchildren Kimo and Hillary.
Condolences may be sent to Rebecca Moore at 485 Friday Avenue, Friday Harbour, WA 98250.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 1:30 p.m., at Davis United Methodist Church. The officiant will be Rev. Brandon Austin. A reception will follow the service.
Gifts in memory of John may be sent to Loaves and Fishes, PO Box 13495, Sacramento, CA 95813-3495.
Let us continue to give God thanks for John’s life and witness and hold his family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
