Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our brother, Rev. Alpha Takagi, died on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.
Alpha began his ministry in the California-Pacific and Pacific Northwest Conferences. In 1959 he transferred into the California Nevada Conference, where he served the St. Marina, Dinuba, Dinuba: Palm, Palo Alto: Aldersgate churches before retiring in 1984.
Rev. Tagaki spent a number of years attending Lake Sequoia Retreat, a summer youth camp that was an outgrowth of the Young People’s Christian Conferences and the desire of the Nisei to gather after World War II was over. He was also very proud of Aldersgate UMC’s continuing association with the Meiji Gakuin Japanese School, a private school in Tokyo which he formed a relationship with as pastor in 1979. Rev. Tagaki is fondly remembered as having a sense of humor and being a great listener. His wife Mary served alongside him throughout his entire ministry and the two were married for 69 years.
He is survived by his four children, Naomi Takagi, Mary Joyce Yoshimura, A. Paul Takagi, and James Takagi, and by six Grandchildren and two Great-Grandchildren. His wife Mary passed away in 2013. Condolences may be sent to A. Paul Takagi at 23 Villa Court, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 1:00 pm, at San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church1515 Fredericks St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93405.
Memorial gifts in Rev. Takagi’s name may be given to San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church, Attn: Building Fund, 1515 Fredericks St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93405.
Let us continue to give God thanks for Alpha’s life and witness and hold his family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
