Rev. Allen J. “Jerry” Carter

4/21/2019

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our brother, Rev. Allen J. “Jerry” Carter, died on Sunday, April 21, 2019.

Jerry served Berkeley Trinity (Associate), Fremont First, Sanger, Ukiah, San Francisco Bethany, Aptos, Livermore Asbury, Modesto First, and Saratoga Grace before retiring in 1996.

His family shares that in his service as a Methodist minister, he led his local churches and the annual conference in participating in numerous civil and human rights issues, from marching in Selma in the early '60s to supporting same sex marriage in the late '90s. He was always working to ensure that his community of faith was not an exclusive club, but open to and supportive of all.

He is survived by his wife, Sara; his daughter, Marian Carter, and her partner, Bill Scharf, from San Anselmo; his son, Allen Carter, and his wife, Toni Cassar, from Pacifica; and by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Condolences may be sent to Sara Carter at 22399 Cupertino Rd., Cupertino, CA 95014.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 30 at 2 p.m. at Sunny View Retirement Community, 22445 Cupertino Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014. The Rev. Dave Denny will officiate.

Donations in memory of Jerry may be sent to the Sunny View Foundation, and mailed to Bill Penrod, Director, 22445 Cupertino Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014.

Let us continue to give God thanks for Pastor Jerry’s life and witness and hold his family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
