Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our sister, Mary Chang, surviving spouse of Rev. Jonah Chang, died on Sunday, July 5, 2020.

Mary came to us as a blessing of her own when Pastor Jonah joined our Conference through recognition of orders in 1967.  She served right alongside brother Jonah as he assumed appointments to Christ church in Fresno, and Buena Vista church in Alameda.  Together they founded the very first Formosan church in The United Methodist Church (San Leandro, Formosan) and East Bay Formosan.  She faithfully walked with him as Jonah went on to serve as Director of Development for Asian American Ministries, with the General Board of Global Ministries, Executive Director for the National Federation of Asian American United Methodists, Superintendent of the Bayview District, and as the Administrator for the Council on Cooperative Mission, of the UCC in Japan, before retiring in 1999.

Mary was born in Taiwan and was living there at the time of her passing. She spoke four languages and loved music, playing the piano and organ. She also served as a choir or music director at churches where Pastor Jonah and she served.  With Jonah she traveled the world in their shared ministry and delighted in getting to know God’s people everywhere.  She was gracious and loving, always making sure that all were fed and cared for.

Mary is survived by her children, Helen Chang and Chuck Goodwin of Fremont CA, Sue and Richard Louie of Castro Valley CA, Paul Chang and Holly Ardito of Massachusetts, daughter-in-law Anne Wenstadt, and by 7 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren. Her son John pre-deceased her and Jonah in 2014. Condolences may be sent to Helen Chang, 43268 Banda Terrace, Fremont, CA  94539.

A virtual Celebration of Life worship service is planned for Friday, July 31, 2020, at 6pm PT (August 1, 2020, at 9am Taiwan time). Those who wish to join the online memorial may request the Zoom link by sending an email to Helen Chang at helchang@comcast.net.

Memorial gift donations may be made to the two Bay Area Taiwanese local churches which Jonah and Mary helped launch, and to which they devoted  so much of their lives and ministry:  San Leandro Formosan United Methodist Church, San Leandro, CA (Formosan United Methodist Church of SF Bay Area), 788 Lewelling Blvd., San Leandro, CA 94579); and East Bay Formosan United Methodist Church, 1755 Sunnyvale Ave., Walnut Creek, CA 94596.

Let us continue to give God thanks for Mary’s life and witness and hold her family close in prayer.  In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)

Blessings,

Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño
