Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our sister, Gene Anna Hawthorne, surviving spouse of Rev. Robert J. Hawthorne, died on Friday, February 15, 2019.
Gene Anna was a faithful companion as her husband served at St. Paul in Stockton, First Church in Palo Alto (Asst.), First Church in Tracy, First Church in Redding, Hillsdale Church in San Mateo, as San Jose District Superintendent, and then Almaden Hills Church in San Jose before retiring in 1990. Robert died in 2012.
Music, traveling and social justice causes were integral to Gene Anna’s life. She learned piano early in life and became an accomplished organist and children’s choir director. Gene Anna and Bob toured the world with the Masterworks Chorale and visited 28 countries throughout Asia, Africa and Europe, though she felt most at home by the ocean in Aptos and Point Lobos, CA. She was actively dedicated to the United Methodist Women, the American Association of University Women and PFLAG’s Peninsula Chapter.
Gene Anna is survived by her daughters, Christine Chase of Bend, OR, Alison Hawthorne of San Francisco, CA, Joy Burton of Vancouver, WA, and Nancy Beyrouti of San Jose, CA, and by four Grandchildren. Condolences may be sent to her family at 3402 Wilcox Avenue, San Jose, CA 95118.
A memorial for Gene Anna will be held on March 2, at 2:00 pm at Almaden Hills United Methodist Church, 1200 Blossom Hill Road, San Jose, CA 95118.
Gifts in memory of Gene Anna may be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, UMCOR, Advance GCFA, PO Box 9068, New York, New York 10087-9068, or to PFLAG at https://pflag.org/supportpflag
Let us continue to give God thanks for Gene Anna’s life and witness and hold her family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
