Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our sister, Doris Long, surviving spouse of Rev. Wayne Long, died on Friday, November 16, 2018.
Doris was a faithful companion as her husband served the Santa Cruz: Grace; Orland: Federated; Lafayette; Winnemucca; Dunsmuir; Jackson; Sutter Creek; Oakland: Laurel; Pt. Pleasant; Isleton; Gridley; Downieville; and Sierra City churches before Wayne’s retirement in 1981. She enjoyed a long life serving with Wayne in ministry and continued the connection of friendships with clergy throughout her life.
Doris was a teacher and a librarian for 25 years before retiring at age 75. She was also the first female city councilwoman and first female mayor of Gridley, CA.
She is survived by her children, Jeannie Long, of Vancouver, WA; Becky Nordstrom of Prescott, AZ; Jerry Long of Gridley, CA; Ken Long of Gridley, CA; and Matthew Long of Chico, CA; and by 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Her children Dwayne Long and Sue Gary pre-deceased her. Condolences may be sent to the family in care of Becky Nordstrom, at 918 S. Manzanita Avenue, Prescott, AZ 86303.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11:00 am, at the Gridley United Methodist Church, 285 Magnolia Street, Gridley, CA 95948. Rev. Karl Coulter will preside.
Gifts in memory of Doris may be sent to The Friends of the Gridley Public Library, 299 Spruce Street, Gridley, CA 95948. Please add a note that the funds should be earmarked for the purchase of children’s books.
Let us continue to give God thanks for Doris’s life and witness and hold her family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
