Pastor Martha Truax

5/23/2021

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our sister, Pastor Martha Truax, died on Pentecost Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the age of 72.  She was licensed and served in ministry as a local pastor in the Missouri Conference of The United Methodist Church but since July 1, 2019, we were fortunate to have her serve among us as a retired part- time local pastor at our Greenville and Chester Community United Methodist Churches.

Martha grew up in Vancouver, Washington.  She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. While a university student Martha married George Chow. Together they started their family in Washington, and then moved to New Jersey, and then to New York, and finally settling in California. In California Martha and George were divorced. Martha then focused her attention on raising her three children while returning to school.  She received a teaching credential in mathematics from San José State University and taught high school math.

After her children had entered their adult life, Martha felt the call to ministry.  She moved to Missouri to obtain her Master’s of Divinity degree at St. Paul School of Theology and joined the Missouri Conference.  She served congregations in Missouri with whom she quickly grew a mutual bond of love, but she missed her family.  So, upon retirement as a local pastor, she moved back to California.   At the time of her death, she was still serving Chester Community and Greenville United Methodist churches, whom she blessed through her pastoral love and care.

Martha loved her family, enjoyed spending time with her pets Micah and Louise, and crocheting, but most of all, she loved worshiping and serving God.

Martha is lovingly remembered by her siblings Ana, Lyle, and Bonnie, and her children Sarah Williams of Davis CA, Simon Chow of Pittsburg CA, and Sonya Susman of Fairfield CA, and by 5 Grandchildren, Penelope, Joshua, Abbie, Ellie, and Isaiah, and many extended family members, friends, and parishioners.

Condolences may be sent to the family via Sonya Susman at 1401 Andover Court, Fairfield CA  94534.  Condolences to the family may also be shared on Martha’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/mtruax515

A Prayer Service in memory of Martha was held on May 26, 2021, at Greenville United Methodist Church and a Memorial Service was held on Friday, May 28, 2021, at Chester United Methodist Church.  Great Northern District Superintendent, Rev. Blake Busick presided.
