Rev. R. Vernice Otto

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our sister, Rev. R. Vernice Otto, died on Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

Vernice served the following United Methodist Churches in California: Willow Glen, San Jose (as Associate Pastor) and Citrus Heights before retiring in 1994.

Before entering into ordained ministry in The United Methodist Church in 1980, Vernice had a passion for “comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable.” She was a volunteer for various organizations including the Clothes Closet in her local community, the Santa Clara County Council of Churches and Friends Outside, a non-profit social justice advocacy group for the incarcerated and their families.  She was also a social worker for the Head Start program in Santa Clara County.

She is survived by her children, Timothy Otto of Stockton, California, Joseph Otto of Davis, California, Steven Otto of Conroe, Texas, and Susan Wright of Spring, Texas, and by 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her grandson Kevin Wright. Condolences may be sent to Timothy Otto at 1033 South Tuxedo Avenue, Stockton, CA  95204.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the family is planning a virtual memorial service. We will update you with a link to view once it becomes available.

Gifts in memory of Pastor Vernice may be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, UMCOR, Advance GCFA, PO Box 9068, New York, New York 10087-9068

Let us continue to give God thanks for Vernice’s life and witness and hold her family close in prayer.  In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
