Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our sister, Erma Pauline Shartz, spouse of the late Rev. Robert K. Shartz, died on Saturday, November 21, 2020.
Erma Pauline “Paula” was a faithful ministry companion as Rev. Shartz served in ministry in the Pacific Northwest, the Illinois Great Rivers Conferences and finally in the California-Nevada Conference to which he transferred in 1956. In our Conference he pastored Glide Memorial, San Francisco, CA, Grandview Avenue and St. Paul’s in Reno, NV, Shoreview in San Mateo, Foster City, Central in Sacramento, Carlmont in San Carlos, St. Luke’s in Richmond, and Kerman churches in California until retiring in 1989.
Sister Paula was a talented organist, and often took the role of choir director at the churches she and her husband served. She was very artistic, enjoyed drawing, and was a fantastic seamstress. She was also known to be a good sport, with a sweet, positive attitude. She would often be heard saying, “Everything is dandy!”
She is survived by her children, Carol Peterson of Middleton, Idaho and Father Cyril Cosmas (formerly Kenneth Shartz) living and serving in the country of Moldova, by 2 grandchildren and by 2 great-grandchildren. Condolences may be sent to Carol Peterson at 422 West Meadow Creek Way, Middleton, Idaho 83644.
A private memorial service has been planned by the family.
Gifts in memory of Paula may be sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, UMCOR, Advance GCFA, PO Box 9068, New York, New York 10087-9068 or online at https://www.umcor.org/
Let us continue to give God thanks for Paula’s life and witness and hold her family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
Blessings,
Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño
