Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our sister, Penelope Vorster, spouse of Rev. Arnold Vorster, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. Regretfully, we only recently were notified of her passing.
Penelope was a faithful companion as her husband served the following United Methodist churches in the state of California: Trinity in Berkeley, Turlock, and Mount Tamalpais in Mill Valley, until retiring in 2001.
Sister Penelope was a talented weaver and made beautiful garments, wall-hangings, and purses. She exhibited her work in galleries and taught weaving at a local community college. She was Chair of the 1986 Northern California Weavers Conference.
In retirement, Penelope and Arnold lived and traveled full time in a motorhome, covering most of the United States including spending a summer in Alaska. In their travels, they loved visiting Port Townsend, Washington. When it was time to retire the motorhome lifestyle, they settled there permanently. Penelope enjoyed volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Centrum, and the Port Townsend Film Festival.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Arnold Vorster. She is survived by her sister Brenda Kelley of Kansas City, Kansas, and step-children Vince Vorster of Discovery Bay, CA and Karen Vorster of Gilroy, California, and by 2 step-grandchildren. Condolences may be sent to Vince Vorster at 4580 Discovery Point, Discovery Bay, CA 94505.
Gifts in memory of Penelope may be sent to Trinity UMC, 609 Taylor Street, Port Townsend, WA 98368, or Habitat for Humanity East Jefferson County, 2001 W Sims Way, Port Townsend, WA 98368.
Let us continue to give God thanks for Penelope’s life and witness and hold her family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
Blessings,
Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño
