Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our brother, Rev. John J. Auer III, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2020.
John began his ministry in 1972, in the Northern Illinois Conference. He transferred into the California-Nevada Conference in 1992 and served the Sierra Vista Fresno, CA, First UMC San Rafael, CA, and First UMC Reno, NV churches before retiring in 2009.
Pastor John was known as a man of strong faith, a loving pastor and colleague, and a great prophetic preacher. He had the gift of a wonderful sense of humor. He loved reading, especially poetry and sometimes wrote a bit of poetry himself. He also loved listening to music. Clergy colleagues remember his passionate speech on the occasion of his retirement from active ministry. He sang a good portion of it using lines from some of his favorite hymns! On his final days, his loved ones serenaded him with ukulele music and songs by Aretha Franklin. John was blessed to be living with his daughter Jane in the last few years of his life.
John was predeceased by his wife Joyce J. Auer on Jan. 1, 2012. He is survived by his children, John J. Auer IV of Reno, NV, Helena Jane Auer of Fresno, CA, and Jacob R. Auer of Sacramento, CA, and by 4 grandchildren. Condolences may be sent to his family via Helena Jane Auer at 3301 E. Garland Avenue, Fresno, CA, 93726-5707.
The date and time for a memorial service has yet to be determined.
Gifts in memory of John may be sent to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202, or to UNICEF at https://www.unicefusa.org/
Let us continue to give God thanks for John’s life and witness and hold his family close in prayer. In our living and in our dying, we belong to God! (Romans 14:8)
