It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our brother, Rev. John M. Schmidt, died on July 11, 2018.
John had a deep faith in Christ and loved ministry. He strived to connect with people and even in retirement, continued to serve small churches in the conference. He loved being outdoors, especially fishing and was particularly fond of building things. Over the years, he remodeled several of his homes and built a dream home northeast of Auburn, CA.
John began his ministry in 1941 in the California-Pacific Conference before transferring into the California-Nevada Conference, where he served the Sacramento Community, Kerman, Fresno, Sacramento Christian Education extension ministries, Durham, Etna Fort Jones, Lindsay, Sparks, Oroville, and Oroville: First, churches before retiring in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Schmidt, his five children, Rev. Carol Carter of Auburn CA, John C. Schmidt of Lewiston CA, Dr. Louise Schmidt of West Haven CA, Paul Schmidt of Reno NV, Raymond Schmidt of Sparks NV, by 22 Grandchildren and by 17 Great-Grandchildren, and 5 Great-Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Charlotte in 2001. Condolences may be sent to Elaine Schmidt at 2185 Morninglory Drive, Sparks, NV 89434.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Sparks United Methodist Church, 1231 Pyramid Way, Sparks, NV 89431.
Gifts in memory of John may be mailed to The California-Nevada Conference, and designated for camperships for those who wish to attend UM camps, including Shasta Camp which John supported for many years.
