Rev. Dr. Kristin Stoneking tapped to lead Bay District

The California-Nevada conference is pleased to announce that Rev. Dr. Kristin Stoneking will be appointed to serve as the Superintendent for the Bay District effective July 1, 2023. Stoneking will succeed Rev. Staci Current who will be concluding her eighth year of service as a Superintendent this June.

"I look forward to working with Kristin," said Bishop Sally Dyck, Interim Bishop for California-Nevada. "Her administrative and strategic skills will benefit both the Cabinet table as well as the Bay District."

Stoneking is the current chair of the conference Council on Finance and Administration and has served as the appointed pastor of Berkeley, Epworth UMC since 2017. In addition, Rev. Dr. Stoneking served as Director and Campus Pastor of the Cal Aggie Christian Association and the Multifaith Living Community at UC Davis and as the Executive Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Originally a member of the Kansas East Annual Conference, Stoneking formally transferred her membership to California-Nevada in 2004. Stoneking received her Bachelors from Rice University in 1990, her MDiv. from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1995 and her PhD from The Graduate Theological Union in 2020. She was a Fellow of the Pluralism Project at Harvard University in 2010.

“I believe California-Nevada has an essential and beautiful witness for our denomination and world. Over many years, we have been at the leading edge of responding to God’s call to grace and justice, embracing the rich diversity among us. The Bay District was created to lift up these gifts, and through a culture of innovation and courage, bring forth growth and vitality. I look forward to continuing to strengthen the work already underway, and am excited and humbled for the opportunity to continue serving in the Bay District with Interim Bishop Sally and the cabinet,” Stoneking said.

As Chair of Cal-Nevada’s Council on Finance and Administration, Stoneking has played a key role in the conference’s achievement over the last six years of giving full apportionments to the general and jurisdictional church. When the Core Team was created, Stoneking was asked to be the first convener of the Compassion and Justice Ministry Focus Area, and continues to serve on the Core Team as the chair of CFA. A member of the annual conference delegation to general and jurisdictional conferences, Stoneking serves as the Chair of the Western Jurisdiction Council on Finance and Administration. She also serves as a board member of Wesleyan Impact Partners (the successor organization to the United Methodist Development Fund,) and is on the external audit committee for the General Board of Global Ministries.

Please join our conference faith family in congratulating Rev. Dr. Stoneking. Let us pray with her and the communities across the Bay District as she begins this exciting new chapter of service.
