The Special Called 2019 General Conference approved the addition of paragraph 2553 to the United Methodist Book of Discipline as a limited and short-term pathway for churches to disaffiliate from the denomination due to issues related to The United Methodist Church’s positions regarding human sexuality.
While the California- Nevada Conference does not seek the departure of any local church, and would grieve any such loss, the Conference also recognizes there are those who might feel compelled for the sake of conscience to seek to disaffiliate.
Several resources are now available to help local congregations considering potential disaffiliation; to clarify the issues, and focus their conversations and discernment as constructively as possible. Resources include a CANV FAQ sheet, Wespath FAQ sheet, CANV Discernment Process guideline, CANV Generalized Terms and Conditions of Disaffiliation, and paragraph 2553 (added to the 2016 Book of Discipline by the Special Called General Conference of 2019).
UMC.org has a great series entitled "Is the UMC really..." that unpacks a lot of the concepts and rhetoric circulating about our church. Click here to access the series.
The California-Nevada Conference remains committed to being a “big tent” that seeks to welcome and care for all, with the radical compassion of Christ. If you have questions, please reach out to your respective District Superintendent or to Rev. Mike Harrell in the Episcopal Office.
