October 2021 Mission Connection Newsletter and Mission Program

Dear Friends in Faith,

Greetings on behalf of our Conference Committee on Mission Service!

Putting our faith into action is an integral part of what it means to be a United Methodist. I would like to share with you some of the recent ways our churches are doing so.

This wildfire season is now the worst on record. Many thousands of Californians have been displaced with a devastating loss of homes, businesses, and jobs. We are grateful for the donation of many thousands of dollars from Conference churches to our Disaster Response Fund and to UMCOR. This has allowed us to fund robust, caring relief.

In addition, a number of churches have donated the supplies we use in our wildfire response – hygiene kits, wildfire buckets, cleaning buckets, sifters and wildfire cleaning kits. Recent donations have come from:

  •  Lynnewood UMC in Pleasanton
  • San Ramon Valley UMC in Alamo
  • Los Altos UMC in Los Altos
  • Holy Cross UMC in Stockton
  • Lake Merritt UMC in Oakland
  • Twin Towers UMC in Alameda
  • Chinese Community UMC in Oakland
  • Nevada City UMC in Nevada City
  • Embrace UMC in Alameda

For more information about this type of donation, contact Steve Elliott, Interim Disaster Response Coordinator at UMVIMCoordinator@calnevumc.org or 925-640-9797.

Attached is the October issue of The Mission Connection, the newsletter of our Conference United Methodist Volunteers In Mission – UMVIM Program. It outlines mission volunteer opportunities with Rise Against Hunger, wildfire recovery and Habitat for Humanity. https://calnev-email.brtapp.com/files/pdf_documents/umvim/the+mission+connection+-+october+2021.pdf https://calnev-email.brtapp.com/files/pdf_documents/umvim/the+mission+connection+-+october+2021.pdf

This month, we would like to highlight the remarkable long-standing commitment of Los Altos UMC to Hope’s Corner. For ten years, Hope’s Corner has been providing meals and shower/laundry services to those in need. We are also pleased to announce that Rev. Justin Ryu has taken the role of chair of the Conference Committee on Mission Service following the previous chair, Rev. Sunae Cho. He will be in communication with our churches in the next months through this newsletter.

We look forward to sharing more of our Conference missions and outreach in the coming months. If you have a mission story you want to share, just send an article and photos to Jorge Domingues at jorged@calnevumc.org or to Shari Sandoval at sharis@calnevumc.org
