The Conference Committee on Mission Service is excited to announce the assignment of Steve Elliott as the new United Methodist Volunteer in Mission (UMVIM) Coordinator for the California-Nevada Conference. In this role, Steve will coordinate our conference volunteer mission team activities, including encouraging volunteer participation in mission service, training teams and team leaders, and promoting specific mission volunteer opportunities.
Sunae Cho, chair of the Mission Service committee and pastor of Evergreeen Valley UMC, San Jose, said, “I am super excited to welcome Steve Elliott, a new member in the Conference Committee of Mission Service, as the UMVIM Coordinator for our conference. Steve joins us with rich experience and expertise to lead our volunteer in mission programs creating opportunities and capacities for our local churches to join the compassionate mission work of our conference. When we participate in the God’s mission, we are blessed, transformed by God’s grace, and share our faith and hope. I am encouraged for our involvement in the Volunteers in Mission movement with Steve Elliott.”
Steve joins the UMVIM team with almost 20 years of experience leading volunteer teams responding to needs in California, across the US and around the globe. In the last two years he led teams to Guatemala and Puerto Rico and helping with several major wildfire responses in California. His prior mission trips include work in Haiti, Tonga, disaster recovery across the US and rebuilding homes lost to wildfires in California. He is an active member of the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church in Alamo, California where his wife, Kim Risedorph, serves as Senior Pastor.
As part of the conference staff UMVIM team, Steve will work alongside Jorge Domingues, the Executive Director of Connectional Ministries, who serves as vice president of the national UMVIM organization and Shari Sandoval who serves as the conference project coordinator for both UMVIM and the offices of Young People and Camping Ministries.
One of Steve's first tasks as UMVIM Coordinator will be to collaborate Shari to organize and lead the upcoming UMVIM Leaders Training Session for our conference on June 26th. Registration for the leader training will open in May. He stated, "I look forward to helping churches connect with the many needs for help. Among others, we are currently beginning to setup teams for wildfire recovery in California this Fall and a return to help with hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico in early 2022.”
Steve will also develop and present a team leader refresher for the Western Jurisdiction VIM later this summer and represent our conference at the Western Jurisdiction UMVIM Board.
If you have been thinking about becoming a trained volunteer in the California-Nevada conference, the timing has never been better to put your faith into action! Both individuals and congregational teams should reach out and be trained to provide recovery support.
