Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño and the Connectional Ministries staff of the California-Nevada Conference are pleased to share that Dr. Mary Cheng will begin serving as the new Director of Leadership Development effective July 26, 2021. Dr. Cheng succeeds Dr. Reginald T.W. Nichols who resigned from the position on June 30, 2021.
Dr. Cheng brings over 30 years of experience in creating, planning and leading programs to develop leadership capacities in faith and non-faith-based settings. She served for four years as the Director of Transformative Education for United Methodist Women and successfully led a team in the development of the transformative mission education program known as “Mission u.” Dr. Cheng has also served in higher education as part of the staff at Cal State East Bay. Mary received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA with a focus on Christian Spirituality. She also holds an M.S. degree in counseling, an M.Div., and B.A. in Sociology and East Asian Studies.
“I am delighted to support the leadership development of the clergy and laity at this crucial time as we exit the pandemic and seek to move together toward God’s good future with resolve and hope,” said Dr. Cheng as she prepares to assume her ministry as part of the conference. Mary has been an active lay person in the United Methodist Church for many years. She is married and has one son and one granddaughter and another on the way. “It is a joy and blessing to welcome Mary as part of our Conference’s team to deepen the leadership capacities of both lay persons and clergy. The coming season of her ministry will bring many opportunities for the churches of the California-Nevada Conference.”, said Rev.
