Bucket Brigade: Volunteers gather to build fire recovery kits

Some of the Bucket Brigade volunteers at the conference center on June 12th.

Volunteers from over 20 churches gathered at the California-Nevada conference center on Saturday June 12th to assemble fire relief and recovery bucket kits. Materials to build the fire buckets were received at the conference center thanks to the generous donations of several churches throughout the California-Nevada Conference and a very generous donation from First Rockwall UMC in the North Texas conference.

Two shifts of 25 UMC volunteers built nearly 200 buckets, which brought the total of prepared fire buckets to 500. The Disaster Response Ministry team hopes to build 500 more buckets in the coming months.

San Francisco Episcopal Leader Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño led the group in prayer as the day began, built buckets with the volunteers and consecrated the finished buckets and storage container that will hold the fire buckets for distribution across the conference.

"Our Conference Fire Bucket Brigade Day was a great reunion!" shared Bishop Minerva. "It was the perfect missional reason for our stepping out of the shelter in place of the pandemic – serving others!  The partnership of lay and clergy and staff leaders, young and old, was wonderful to behold!  I am grateful for our leaders in this area of our ministry and for the support of Rockwall UMC of the North Texas Conference.  We are stronger when we work connectionally."

Fortune magazine writer Chris Morris' penned an article on April 15 in which he stated that the coming 2021 fire season could be catastrophic, siting the San José State University’s Fire Weather Research Laboratory which noted that "the level of moisture in plant life, which is normally at its peak in April, is far below both its annual average and previous record lows."

"While we hope not to have to use any of the over 500 buckets built to date, we want to always be prepared," stated Director of Disaster Response Sonja Edd-Bennett.

This is the first of several Bucket Brigade events scheduled in the coming months. If you would like to volunteer for these opportunities check in with the California Nevada conference Disaster Response Ministry page where dates and times will be published.
