California-Nevada United Methodist Women: Mission u is back!

The CA-NV Conference United Methodist Women in partnership with the CA-NV Conference UMC are excited to announce “Mission u is back!“

What is Mission u?  Mission u is a transformative educational program designed by United Methodist Women.  Though Mission u is designed by United Methodist Women, it is open to everyone who wants to grow in faith and action.  Topics are timely, eg in 2020 ‘Finding Peace in an Anxious World’ was introduced as the spiritual growth study.  The studies are biblically based – exploring challenging issues in depth and asking participants what it means to follow Jesus right here, right now.  I still remember the first Mission u I attended (it was called School of Christian Mission, then).  The study I took was ‘global economics’.  I came away spouting NAFTA, WTO, IMF, and more and had an in-depth understanding of how the policies of these organizations were affecting people adversely and unjustly around the world.  When the event concluded, I left equipped and charged to claim my voice to make change.

The first study offered in our conference this year will be ‘Pushout – The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools’.  You may be surprised by the title.  Who would think that schools would have anything to do with the criminalization of their students?  And black girls in particular?

It began with the adoption of ‘zero tolerance’ policies in the 1990’s and the schools’ hiring of ‘school resource officers’, another name for a police officer.  Schools outsourced discipline to the SRO resulting in far more arrests of students, disproportionately black students, inducting them into the ‘school to prison pipeline’.  A short introduction to the ‘school to prison pipeline’ can be viewed here.  Download the ‘Mission u – Pushout’ flyer to learn more and to register.

This year, Mission u will be conducted on Zoom.  In addition to the ‘Pushout’ study, the CA-NV Conference is offering a youth study, ‘Becoming Peacemakers in a Culture of Violence’, and two young-adult/adult studies which are: ‘Finding Peace in an Anxious World’; and ‘Bearing Witness in the Kin-dom’ (offered in Korean, Spanish and English).  You can find information about the studies and the dates they are being offered by clicking here.  All are welcome.  Registration links will be available for all the studies soon.

Mission u offers a unique opportunity to grow in faith and explore what it means to live ones’ faith in the world today.  Don’t miss out.  Plan to participate in one or more studies – and bring a friend along.
