Rev. Jorge Domingues, Director of Connectional Ministries for the California-Nevada Annual Conference, was “randomly selected for further questions” while visiting the US-Mexico border at McAllen, Texas with Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño this week.
“It was a routine thing, but I had the opportunity to see the CBP [Customs and Border Patrol] from inside,” he reports. “Nice officers trying to help people with problems on their visas who were really scared … But it was a temporary scare to the rest of the team that I [was] pulled out of the line and taken inside without anybody knowing what was happening.”
Domingues, who is a native of Brazil and a frequent international traveler, says he understands how intimidating it can be to cross an international border, having been “on that side of the window so many times in the past.”
The border visit was organized in conjunction with a United Methodist Immigration Task Force meeting.
