Volunteers Being Recruited for Fiji UMVIM trip

10/15/2019

A team of volunteers is being assembled for a United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) trip to Temple Methodist Church in Nasinu, Fiji (near Suva) to assist with the construction of a new worship sanctuary.

The date for the trip has not been set.

Interested? Here’s what you need to know:

The building frame is a typical commercial structure of red iron, rebar-reinforced, formed concrete, and concrete block construction, with a metal roof, and interior framing and flooring of wood, both rough and finished material.

Latest photos (as of mid-October) show work being done on the roof framing. Previous work completed includes a formed concrete retaining wall (as the structure is sited into a hill), with most of the red iron frame and block walls completed.

Projected work for next spring will likely be interior wood framing or exterior wall finish work.

Volunteers with carpentry skills and the other essential construction trades are preferred.

The trip is self-funded but fundraising efforts can be undertaken to offset trip expenses. On previous trips to Fiji, trip expenses have included materials needed and/or local purchase of tools, which were then left with the host church.

The suggested base figure for participating in the mission trip is $2,000, which covers air fare, transportation, and food. The host church will provide lodging.
