Jaelin is a member of Glide Memorial UMC in San Francisco and has been selected to be a part of the Western Jurisdictional (WJ) Delegation to The Global Young People’s Convocation.
The Global Young People’s Convocation (GYPC) is the global event of United Methodist young people. It is held once every four years for the purpose of:
- Celebrating the mission and vitality of young people in the United Methodist Church
- Raising the joys and concerns of young people from the global community
- Developing young people as leaders for effective ministry in local churches and communities of faith
- Highlighting emerging trends in youth and young adult ministry
- Providing a common forum that embraces the global reality of the church.
The GYPC also has a Legislative Forum, which is the venue for proposing and discussing legislation related to issues of concern to young people. The 2016 General Conference of the UMC approved a proposal to change the legislation part of the GYPC from a formal “assembly” to a “forum.” This July it will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa and the WJ will be sending a delegation of 15 young people, four of which are from the California-Nevada Annual Conference.
Kelly Peterson Cruise, Young People's Ministry Director, sat down with Jaelin at a recent gathering at The Waller Center and asked her a few questions.
Why did you want to be a part of the Delegation?
“ It was suggested to me by Bishop Brown (our interim Pastor at Glide), and the Conference Office of YPM sent out an announcement which I acted upon because I like to be involved, to help others, advance my faith and the travel opportunity seemed amazing.”
How have you previously been involved with the church?
“I’ve been a Youth Delegate to Annual Conference, assisted the Bishop during plenary session and volunteer at my local church’s activities.”
What do you hope to achieve or get out of serving on the Delegation:
“I hope to gain a broader perspective of the world and to impact the United Methodist Church in a positive way. I look forward to be connecting with others in the Global Church.”
