JJ Warren, the young, openly gay certified candidate for ministry who delivered an impassioned speech on the floor of the 2019 General Conference, has scheduled appearances at four churches in the California-Nevada Conference in the first two weekends in August.
He is on a preaching tour titled, "Forward Together: Reclaiming Our Church Through Radical Love," encouraging churches to "move forward toward God's unconditional love," prior to beginning his studies at Boston University School of Theology in the fall.
"Let me tell you ... as an openly gay candidate for ministry, I still have hope ... that we can move forward together," Warren said in the wake of the special-called session, reflecting on the adoption of the Traditional Plan and reaction to it.
He will be at St. Mark's UMC in Sacramento for a informal discussion time on Saturday, August 3, 6:30-7:30 p.m. The following day, Sunday, August 4, Warren will give the morning message at First UMC, Sacramento during the 10 a.m. worship service. Then on Saturday, August 10, he will host a discussion at Los Altos UMC from 4 to 6 p.m. On Sunday, August 11, JJ Warren will be guest preaching at Walnut Creek UMC 9:30 a.m. worship service as part of the church's 25th anniversary of becoming a reconciling congregation. A celebration luncheon at 11:15 a.m. follows the service.
"After the heartbreaking outcome of General Conference 2019, we as a denomination around the world have to wrestle with the question: 'How do we move forward?' As a delegate to the special session, and as a certified candidate for ministry, I want to join with your church in visioning together how we move forward together in justice. We must not only hope for a day when all people will be included into the UMC, we must be convicted that God will use us to create such a way. Together, I believe we will transform our denomination – and the world – through love!" Warren says.
Warren has spent the past four years preaching at churches and youth events, founding a progressive Christian community on his undergraduate campus, and leading the Young Adult Ministries Team of the Upper NY Conference. He has been featured in The Huffington Post, Study Breaks magazine, Sarah Lawrence's the Phoenix, and on NBC. He spent the 2017-18 academic year studying Biblical Hebrew and early Church history at Oxford University, England.
