Hurricane Florence: How Cal-Nev Can Help

Hurricane Florence: How Cal-Nev Can Help

United Methodists in the California-Nevada Annual Conference are “passionate” about disaster relief and recovery, according to Conference Disaster Response Director Sonja Edd-Bennett. Her metric? People declare their passions “with their feet, and with their checkbook,” she says – the latter illustrated by the sums  given to disaster relief through the Conference so far this year: $76,000 to the Conference’s Disaster Relief Fund, $107,000 to Puerto Rico disaster relief (through the Annual Conference Offering), and $21,000 to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), the relief agency for the denomination. In addition, California-Nevada has trained numerous individuals eager to assist those impacted by disaster, Edd-Bennett says.
Now there is a new focus for that passionate concern, following Hurricane Florence’s onslaught on the East Coast.
While it is too soon for us to provide physical assistance, as Edd-Bennett monitors the situation and communicates with UMCOR about future opportunities for involvement, there are three things that concerned United Methodists can do now to help.
First, PRAY for all those affected by the storm – not only residents but those providing aid, as well.
RELIEF KITS are always needed. Learn how to assemble a kit – and where to send it – by clicking here.
Finally, FINANCIAL SUPPORT will enable early responders to assist people immediately and will make possible the relief and recovery efforts that are expected to be needed for an extended period. Donate to UMCOR here. You may designate that your gift goes to U.S. or international disaster response.
Another way to assist is to become a part of an Early Response Team for this or another disaster. Edd-Bennett says she anticipates there will be “numerous opportunities to serve.” If you’re interested in attending an upcoming TRAINING, contact her at or 916-374-1525.
