GBCS, Bishop Carcaño Join IIC in Protesting Fines by Trump Administration

7/3/2019

The General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) has joined the Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC) in protesting the Trump administration’s just-announced strategy of exacting fines of up to $799 per day from immigrants who ignore deportation orders – as well as from those, including faith leaders, who offer them sanctuary while they fight deportation.

Calling the administration plan an “unjust bully tactic,” GBCS Director of Civil and Human Rights Rev. Jeania Ree V. Moore said information will be forthcoming next week, as to how a person can participate in opposing it. In the meantime, she calls attention to the IIC press release, which quotes Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño, who chairs the United Methodist Immigration Task Force.

Bishop Carcaño’s statement reads:

“The recent fines issued to immigrants in sanctuary are the latest anti-immigrant strategy from the Trump Administration. This bullying tactic is intended to strike fear and despair into the hearts of immigrants. It is also designed to break down the community that has gathered to support them. As Christians, we reject these efforts. We remember that Jesus calls us to welcome the stranger – when we do this, we welcome Him. We oppose fining the Jesus whom we see in our migrant siblings.”

The Interfaith Immigration Coalition is made up of 52 national, faith-based organizations bridging many theological traditions and united through a goal of seeking to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of refugees and migrants.
