Lunch with the district superintendents and Zoom conferencing with California-Nevada Conference Lay Leader Micheal Pope and Core Team Chair Kathi McShane were two of the many activities on the agenda at New Pastor Orientation, hosted at the conference center in West Sacramento on September 10.

Eighteen pastors attended – three of them, transfers from another conference. Included in the group were certified lay ministers, local pastors, and ordained clergy.

New Pastor Orientation is designed to help pastors on their journey who are either new to the conference or providing pastoral leadership at a new level. It includes information critical to their work on Christ's behalf as they serve their local congregation.

“We consider this a high priority,” said Los Rios District Superintendent Schuyler Rhodes. “We encourage new pastors to make every effort to adjust their schedule so that they may attend.”

This year attendees came from as far as south as Tehachapi, as far north as Mount Shasta, and as far east as Yerington, Nevada.

The morning session covered practical ministry topics such as workflow management, worship preparation, visioning, and conflict transformation. The afternoon time focused on the connectional aspect of the church, including how to use the local church dashboard, conference strategy and organization, pension and health benefits, financial stewardship, and congregational development.

During one of their breaks, pastors had the opportunity to tour the conference center and were warmly welcomed by staff.
