California-Nevada held A Gathering of the Orders annual meeting January 28-30 at Asbury UMC in Livermore, California. All clergy including Deacons, Elders and local pastors from across the conference connection came together for a time of worship, workshops and a little bocci ball.
The 2020 Gathering theme was 'Casting Our Nets" (John 21: 1-6) which was a natural extension of the 2019 theme "In the Boat with Jesus". The Planning Team designed the event to help participants look at many different familiar joys and pain points of ministry while also thinking together around new ministry perspectives, including opportunities to create co-operative forms of mission and ministry.
Clergy examined the gospel fishing story from many perspectives, including that of the fish that may be slipping through the nets, and as fish who again and again are caught by the Holy Spirit of the Living God.
Plenary sessions included rich times of worship with messages from Shijung Shim, Karen Stoffers-Pugh and Theon Johnson III. Bishop Carcaño and the California-Nevada General Conference and Jurisdiction Delegates hosted an information and Q&A session to help folks better understand the plans and legislation that will be coming during GC2020.
Workshops ranged from a meeting of the Association of Local Church Pastors and Associate Members, to a musical jam session; a tour and DYI of the community garden; new ways to create community including Dinner Church; the benefits of UMC camping Ministry; interfaith explorations and sessions around homelessness.
Of course, pastors also want to have fun! The group shared an evening of fellowship and moderate athletic activity at Campo di Bocci where, regardless of expertise, everyone came out a winner.
California-Nevada Conference extends a big thank you to host church Asbury UMC for welcoming and caring for all details that helped make our time together rewarding. Asbury staff and pastors were on hand throughout the Gathering and include Facilities Coordinator, Mitchie McCammon; Office Administrators, Terri Gamble and Karen Bauman; Janitor, Mike Ptak and Pastors, Chelsea Constant and Kathy La Point-Collup.
