Grass Valley UMC Hosts Interfaith Gathering

11/15/2017

In our troubled times, people of many faiths, and people of no particular religious tradition, wonder how to address their concerns together. The churches of "Interfaith Nevada County" (aka "INC"), inspired by a proposal from the Ba 'hai Community, came up with a way to gather and share their hopes in prayer for a whole day. People of all kinds joined in a day of prayer for World Unity and Peace, on Saturday October 21, at Grass Valley United Methodist Church. The vigil began at 7 a.m. with Benedictine Morning Prayer led by the Rev. Becky Goodwin, pastor at Grass Valley UMC, and her husband, the Rev. Paul Colbert, an Episcopal priest. Every hour, a different meditation or prayer session was offered by a different faith leader. The day included a variety of experiences, from silent Quaker practice, to harp music, scripture readings, singing meditation, the recitation of inspiring words from wise ones in history, a ceremony to plant a peace rose, a display of world religions and peace projects, and two festive meals. All agreed this could be the beginning of an annual event, and could include even more religions.
