Early Response Team Mission Trip to Puerto Rico

1/19/2018

Hurricane Maria, one of the most powerful hurricanes in history, devastated the Island of Puerto Rico.  The Methodist Church of Puerto Rico (MCPR) has issued an invitation for teams to assist them with recovery and rebuilding.  An Early Response Team Mission Trip has been planned for March 17 to 24. The group is going to assist with the near-term damage mitigation.  The specific assignment will be made closer to the time of the trip, but persons can assume it will likely include tarping, emergency repairs, and related tasks.  The MCPR has arranged for teams to stay at a retreat camp, or a local church. Conditions will be somewhat rough - no electricity, no air conditioning and no hot water although drinking water and meals will be provided. The team will be led by Leslie Carmichael of Los Altos UMC, and Steve Elliott from Asbury UMC in Livermore. Participants must be currently badged  ERT’s. Persons interested in becoming an ERT, there will be a training class on Saturday, February 24, in Los Altos to get people qualified. Additional mission trips to Puerto Rico are anticipated for both ERT and United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) teams.  The MCPR is currently limiting teams to people 18 years and older. To register for the ERT class, click here. The cost will be about $500 for participant costs such as meals and housing, plus $600 to $700 for air travel. For more information or to register for the trip or training contact: Leslie, carm-lee@pacbell.net, or (650) 468-7890, or Steve, sae612@msn.com, or (925) 640-9797.  Registration closes on Sunday, March 4.
