Early Response Team (Basic) Training taches the basics of disaster response, including how to stabilize and secure homes safely and how to work effectively with survivors and others on the response team. This is a standardized class, conducted by authorized United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) trainers, that is required for the basic ERT UMCOR identification badge that serves as evidence of successful completion of the basic training.
ERTs are not a first-response group of emergency workers, nor are they recovery, rebuild, or repair teams. Under very specific guidelines, ERTs assist survivors without causing further harm or being a burden to the affected community. Teams may be needed locally, in other parts of the conference, or of the nation, or elsewhere in the world. (However, ERTs require an invitation to travel to another district, conference, or jurisdiction.)
The Early Response Team (Basic) training class costs $35 per person and includes: training manual, ID badge, T-shirt, lunch, and morning snacks. There is an additional $41 cost for a mandatory online background check and Safe Sanctuary training, which must be completed in advance at https://www.cnumc.org/backgroundcheckprocedure.
Children’s Disaster Services Volunteers are trained and organized through the Church of the Brethren.
Participants in the 27-hour workshop learn to provide comfort and encouragement to children by offering the healing young children need in traumatic situations. They learn to create a safe, friendly environment that gives children the chance to engage in therapeutic play activities designed to relieve stress and calm fears.
This workshop includes a simulated shelter experience (an overnight stay) and will be provided to any group of 15 or more adults interested in working with children after a disaster. Participants completing the course will have the opportunity to become certified Children’s Disaster Services volunteers.
Because children can experience personal disasters (when a friend moves away, a pet dies, etc.) people who come in contact with a distressed child can benefit from this workshop. Many of the concepts taught in the workshop are appropriate to use at those times as well as after major disasters.
Normally a registration fee of $45 covers the cost of the training materials. Donations to cover other expenses are appreciated. Please see the Church of the Brethren's Workshop dates and locations page for more information.
