In response to the worst statewide storm damage in California history, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Cal-Nev Conference. This grant is for funding our immediate relief efforts.
The grant will be used to provide direct survivor assistance such as temporary housing, pressing household necessities, food and other priorities. “We are so grateful for this grant. It matches the funds the Conference has already allocated.” – explained Steve Elliott, our Conference Disaster Response Coordinator.
“The timing of this grant is ideal. It comes just as we are deploying Early Response Teams, first to the Merced Area and then elsewhere in the State.” – continued Elliott. In addition, Conference volunteers will be staffing the Merced Disaster Response Center (DRC) through Sunday, January 22nd. At the DRC, we will be offering flood survivors gift cards, hygiene kits, cleaning supplies and cleaning assistance.
In addition to this UMCOR grant, we can use help from the churches of our Conference. The cost of this recovery will exceed the generous grant.
