Director of Children's Ministry


Develop and lead a comprehensive children's ministry program at First Palo Alto United Methodist Church for children ranging in age from infancy to 5th grade. This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, reporting to the senior pastor. The director oversees the Sunday School program, Vacation Bible School, and special events during Advent and Easter, as well as plans and implements other educational and fellowship programs for children and supervises childcare attendants. A more complete job description follows: Director of Children’s Ministry First Palo Alto United Methodist Church I. Primary Function and Duties A. Develop and lead a comprehensive Children’s Ministry program at First Palo Alto UMC that provides opportunities for children to experience the love of God, learn about Jesus Christ, and grow in their faith. Our children range from infancy through fifth grade. B. Work collaboratively and communicate regularly with the pastoral team to guide the scope and vision of Children’s Ministry at the church. C. Promote and ensure that children are a vital part of all church activities and experiences: worship, fellowship, outreach, mission, stewardship, planning, etc. D. Develop, equip, and oversee the Children’s Sunday School program. This includes recruiting, training, and supporting teachers; identifying and recommending curricula that can be used consistently and comprehensively across age levels; procuring and maintaining supplies necessary for all activities; etc. Children’s Sunday School classes range from preschool through fifth grade. E. Schedule, plan, publicize, implement, and lead other educational and fellowship programs for children. This will include but not be limited to activities like Vacation Bible School, special events during Advent and Easter, summer Sunday programing, other seasonal events as appropriate, afterschool enrichment, mission opportunities, community service, District and Conference events, etc. F. Design and lead Children’s Discovery Worship on Sunday mornings during the 10:45 am worship service. G. Implement and oversee an age-appropriate curriculum for our youngest children in the nursery so that they can begin to learn about God and experience God’s love. Train and support nursery staff to accomplish this goal. H. Implement Safe Sanctuaries. Update policies as necessary and facilitate training on a regular basis. Screen all volunteers who will be working with minors. I. Supervise and support nursery attendants. J. Attend weekly staff meetings for check-in, planning, and visioning. K. Publicize Children’s Ministry programs, activities, and events to families in our congregation and community. Regular communication should include monthly updates and information in the church newsletter, emails, church website, posts to social media, etc. II. Qualifications A. Be a disciple of Jesus Christ, and be a role model of Christian love. B. Have a passion for children and their families with a desire to help them grow in their Christian faith. C. Have an understanding of the Christian faith and an appreciation for the United Methodist Church and its values and practices. First Palo Alto UMC is a Reconciling congregation. D. Demonstrate a willingness and ability to work collaboratively with the pastoral team, church staff, volunteer leaders, parents, and children. E. Have excellent communication skills including knowledge and use of email, social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) F. Be able to plan, advertise, and lead events for children. G. Pass a background check required to work with children. H. Previous experience working with children and youth. III. Work Schedule and Compensation A. This is a part-time position of approximately 20 hours per week. B. Weekly hours will include Sundays plus those required to fulfill the primary functions and duties as described above. C. Compensation will be negotiated as part of the hiring process and will depend upon experience.
