Choir Director


Position Purpose: Develop and maintain a well-rounded choral music program for services of worship and special events. Responsible to: Pastor, Staff-Parish Relations Committee Education & Skill Set: Bachelor of Music (or equivalent) Wide knowledge of church music styles and literature (traditional and contemporary) Training and experience in choral directing Demonstrated leadership and communication skills Hours: 10 hours per week – one rehearsal each week (presently scheduled Thursday at 7:30 p.m.). Sunday morning mini-rehearsal at 10 a.m. for the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Special events, as requested, including funerals. Vacation Bible School, church bazaar. Principal Responsibilities: Direct the choir and accompanist in rehearsal and presentation of selected music at worship services and during special events. Familiarize the choir with United Methodist service music and practice the same in preparation for its use at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. To work with the pastor and staff in developing appropriate processional and recessional features of the 10:30 a.m. worship. At least several years of experience in choral conducting with instrumental conducting a plus. Prepare special musical selections for major seasons (Advent, Lent, Easter, Pentecost and Christmas). Include music from a variety of cultures and ethnicities. Recommend and schedule music to be performed in all worship settings. Provide hymn choices for the weekly bulletin. Provide for a substitute in the event of planned absences. Encourage and deploy instrumental groups for choral and other music presentations. Attend Tuesday staff meetings(noon-1p.m) to carry out the choral music program.
