Choir Director Concord United Methodist Church Concord, California Position Overview: The duties of the Choir Director include aspects in leadership, performance, and administration as covered under Job Description Details. This position is budgeted for an average of 12 hours per week for 41 weeks during the year. The 41 weeks will be from January through the first week of June and then re-start the last week of August through the end of the year. During the 11 weeks of summer, the church choir will be on a hiatus status with the Choir Director’s services in an unpaid time-off status until the last week of August. This is an At-Will position. Choir Director will report to the Pastor and Staff Parish. The primary responsibilities and accountabilities of the Choir Director include the following: Job Description Details: Worship Music: -In collaboration with the Worship Planner, Pastor, Organist, and others, plan, select, and conduct music for the weekly Sunday morning worship services (8:00 am praise band rehearsal and 9:00 am and 10:30 am weekly services). -Direct Thursday evening choir rehearsals from 7:30-9:00 pm, with occasional solo and small group coaching from 7:00-7:30 pm. Direct extra rehearsals as necessary. -Coordinate appropriate music selections, special event planning (i.e. Christmas Carol Sing, Christmas Eve, Christmas Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Services, community concerts, etc.) with Pastor, Choir/Community Orchestra leaders and others. -Coordinate and communicate with leaders of the Choir, Youth Ensemble, Bells, and Community Orchestra to provide music, oversight, and musical expertise; coordinate Youth Sundays and communicate with Youth Director. -Other duties as required/assigned. Administration: -Develop a Music Ministry Year Schedule for submission to church administrator. -Attend a weekly worship planning meeting (scheduled at a mutually-agreeable time) and other meetings as required. -Submit music selections on a timely basis to church administrator Communication: -Communicate scheduled plans to musicians, church staff, and others. -Communicate choir plans to church administrator in a timely manner. -Communicate all music plans to the worship planner and the Creative Council. Qualifications: -Bachelor’s degree or higher in sacred music or related field (equivalent experience will be considered) -Professional conducting experience in a church setting a plus. -Vocal training and experience in choral rehearsal techniques and conducting. -Interest, knowledge, and significant, successful experience leading a wide range of music styles, including traditional (hymns), contemporary, classical, folk, spirituals, and gospel music. -Proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a way that fosters recruitment, appreciation, and retention of volunteer vocalists. -Healthy and effective interpersonal and communication skills. -Expressed commitment to the spiritual and numeric growth of CUMC. -A personal faith that inspires faithfulness in others -Knowledge of the Liturgical Calendar a must; familiarity with United Methodist Church theology a plus. -Working knowledge of sound equipment a plus. -Keyboard or other instrument skills preferred but not required.
