Purpose The purpose of the Music Director is to help musicians and the congregation grow as disciples of Jesus Christ through worship and music. The Music Director is responsible for overseeing the total music ministry for our church, and for accompanying musicians and the congregation in rehearsals, worship, and other services. The Music Director will be a visionary, always looking for ways to expand and enrich the music program of the church. The Music Director identifies strategies to expand music education and ministry in the church, through adding or enlarging opportunities for participation by people of varying abilities and ages in music, drama, and other forms of ministry involving the performing arts. The Music Director will identify people of faith with musical talents, and encourage them in using and developing their gifts in service to Christ and the Church. Primary Responsibilities The Music Director will manage the music program including preparing annual goals as part of the church's strategic plan, making purchases and monitoring expenses within the annual budget, and providing feedback and annual program reviews to the Pastor. In collaboration with the Pastor and the Worship Committee, the Music Director will plan the schedule of music for regular weekly services, and up to six special services per year. They will maintain the music library, and be responsible for obtaining and tracking all the required licensing and permissions. The Music Director will be responsible for the hiring of substitute or guest musicians as required. The Music Director will be expected to be present at Sunday morning services, schedule and direct weekly music rehearsals, and attend regular meetings with the Pastor and fellow staff, and church committees when requested. They will provide accompaniment to the congregation and music groups in services when appropriate, and provide direction for all other musical groups. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Bachelor's degree in Music Performance, Music Education, or related field Five years minimum experience accompanying soloists or music groups on the piano/keyboard Demonstrated abilities in multiple musical genres, with sacred music experience preferred. Experience instructing or directing beginning musicians or children is highly preferred. Strong communication and organizational skills are required. Ability to play additional instruments and conduct music groups of various types; experience with handbells a major plus. This position is part-time, requiring an average of 12 hours per week. Salary is commensurate with experience, but the minimum equivalent gross salary is $14,000. Two Sundays of paid vacation leave are available each year. Attendance during church holidays will be required. Professional development is encouraged, and some financial assistance is available.
