Latin American Meeting of Methodist Women
February 13, 2014
It was at the Kawai Recreation Center where the Methodist Women Meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean took place from January 22 to 25. The event included 80 women from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. Rev. Debbie Weatherspoon, Minister of Discipleship at Los Altos United Methodist Church, attended the event.
The theme of the meeting was: "To reaffirm our identity." The meeting was a joint venture between General Global Higher Education of Ministry (GBHEM), Methodist Church of Peru (IMP), Council of Evangelical Methodist Churches of Latin America and the Caribbean (CIEMAL), Upper Room, and United Methodist Women (UMW). The meeting was opened, with welcoming remarks by Bishop Jorge Bravo.
Three themes were developed:
- Walk of women in the Latin American context and the world and efforts to reassert their dignity with Dr. Dora Canales (Peru);
- Women and empowerment by Dr. Cristian de la Rosa (USA); and
- Women and Ordained Ministry: Balance and Perspectives from Latin America and the Caribbean by the Rev. Rosanna Panizo (USA).
During closing worship Bishop Jorge Bravo led communion with retired United Methodist Bishop Linda Lee who delivered the sermon. The meeting ended with a cultural evening where women actively participated wearing their beautiful costumes and sharing talents of each country.
