Pilgrimage for comprehensive immigration reform
*By Linda Kuruhara
The Diocesan Immigration Support Network along with PICO of California is planning a pilgrimage event to raise the consciousness of people in regards to Comprehensive Immigration Reform nationwide and to act to get the Trust Act passed in the state of California.
United Methodists are being asked to join them in the pilgrimage along the route. We can walk alongside them or cheer them on. The participants will be walking various distances for a 240 mile trek from Sacramento to Bakersfield. There will be another pilgrimage from San Diego to Bakersfield. Stories of sacrifice from the undocumented community will be shared. This pilgrimage is a reconstruction of the march organized by Cesar Chavez in 1966 with agricultural workers and in this moment of history our community will say with a loud voice that we are part of this country.
On Sunday, August 11, at 3 p.m., Bishop Jaime Soto will be blessing and celebrating the walkers who represent the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. with the beginning of their large mission. It will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 711 “T” Street. The March will begin on Monday, August 12, at Our Lady of Guadalupe. They will commence at 5 a.m. and head to Elk Grove where they plan to hold a media conference about noon.
All clergy are invited to walk with them on the first day upholding them in prayer and walking alongside them. All congregations are invited to bring a delegation to the walking route to walk or cheer them on. For more information you may call Gabby Trejo at (916) 955-6264 or Bud Kaicher at (760) 622-4041.
