New Community UMC Celebrates 10th Anniversary

April 17, 2013

New Community United Methodist Church (UMC) in Oakhurst, CA, nestled in the foothills near Yosemite, will celebrate their 10th Anniversary on April 21 at the Oakhurst Community Park at 10 a.m. The celebration will include a worship service followed by a free barbeque as a way of the church saying "Thanks" to God and the community for ten years of living out God's love by embracing diversity, seeking justice, and changing hearts.

New Community UMC held its first official worship service on April 20, 2003, after two years on the part of a group led by Kenneth and Deborah Gudger, to bring a Methodist church to the Oakhurst area just south of the entrance to Yosemite National Park. The former Community Church of Oakhurst voted in 2003 to deed the church facility on Road 426 to the Methodists.
The church's ministries include a free weekly community meal on Wednesday evenings, shelter for the homeless during winter months, backpacks filled with comforting items for children who have been removed from their homes, clothing for prisoners about to be released, and a thrift store.

According to Pastor Helen Mansfield whose appointment to New Community began last summer, "That first worship service was high energy and this celebration in the park promises to be the same. There will be lots of music from SpiritBand, the popular group led by well-known local musician Kirk Moulin and his wife Monika, New Community's director of music. After worship, everyone is invited to stay for games and lots of great food and fellowship. You don't even need to be a Methodist to join us!"

Oakhurst Community Park is located at the south end of Highway 49 in Oakhurst, CA.
