Bishop Challenges Confirmation Classes to Give God Their Doubts and Questions
By Dr. Larry R. Hygh, Jr.
"What is God inviting you to do?" was the question posed to confirmands by Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr., resident bishop of the California-Nevada Annual Conference. Brown challenged more than 120 sixth through tenth graders from across the annual conference to give God their doubts and questions and let God help them find the answers. The challenge came during the Bishop's Confirmation Retreat.
"For me, it (confirmation) marked the beginning of a life walking with Jesus, a life that has been very blessed," said Brown. He told the young people gathered at Camp Lodestar, "Today, you're already in a position to be a leader…go deep to learn what God is teaching you about you."
In addition to a question and answer session with Bishop Brown, workshops included the topics of prayer, living your faith, and hearing God.
Kelly Newell, California-Nevada Director, Camping and Young People's Ministries, says participants are in the confirmation process in their local church. Some have started, others are midway through the process, and for others the retreat is the culmination of the confirmation process. "We want them to walk away realizing this decision in faith and considering who it is God might have them be in their faith, and in their church," said Newell. "This is not just a moment. We offer a lot of moments for young people in the church," she added. "We're really trying to create a momentum, an inner strength that keeps going forward and allowing them to discover who they are in Jesus Christ."
There were two retreats this year, one held in early March, the other early April, at Camps Monte Toyon and Lodestar.
